TRANSCENDENT 2019 (Transformative Summer Elective Course in Dentistry 2019) is the first dentistry summer school program held by Faculty of Dentistry, Padjadjaran University which was held in Bandung. During this summer school, the participants are offered focused educational programs by observation in the oral maxillofacial surgery clinic as well as live surgery, including visiting our Cleft Centre facility. This summer school served not only as a step to internationalize FKG Unpad but also as a program to raise awareness about cleft palate.

Five students from Umeå University, Sweden and University of Dundee, Scotland took part as participants in TRANSCENDENT. The event was presented in the form of seminars, clinical observation, excursion study, and campaign given by some of our finest professors and dentists. Besides that, participants also experienced a city tour visiting unique places in Bandung City.

TRANSCENDENT 2019 was held for eight days. Participants were welcomed by an opening ceremony which was held in Universitas Padjadjaran Oral and Dental Teaching Hospital (RSGM Unpad), Bandung. The opening ceremony was followed by an agenda called “Meet the Experts”, which was a seminar about Cleft Lip and Palate which was delivered by drg. Ida Ayu Astuti, Sp.BM(K), drg. Agus Nurwiyadh, Sp.BM(K), and Dr. drg. Eriska Riyanti, Sp.KGA(K).

On the second day, the participants had the opportunity to attend clinical observation in radiology and prosthodontic installation. They also visited Cleft Lip and Palate Center RSGM Unpad where the patients took speech therapy after their surgery. Besides getting dental-related experience, participants also visited historical sites in Bandung City on the third day. Those historical sites were Gua Pawon, where they observed the Pawon Men’s fossil and how it connected with the science of forensic odontology, and Stone Garden.

On the fourth day, the participants visited YPPCBL, where they interacted with children that have cleft and lip palate conditions. The participants also visited Saung Udjo, where they were taught to play Angklung, a heritage musical instrument. Participants attended clinical observation again on the 5th and 6th day. They attended clinical observation in periodontics installation on the 5th day and had a chance to watch a cleft lip and palate surgery. The next day they attended clinical observation in pedodontics installation and oral medicine installation.

In the last two days of TRANSCENDENT 2019, the participants had a gala dinner and then visited Batik Komar Production House the next day to do some crafts.
