Viral Involvement in Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders: A Scoping Review

This scoping review analyzed 28 studies (2014–2023) on viruses associated with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) beyond HPV and EBV. Findings showed a high prevalence of viral detection (78.57%), including HPV, EBV, HBV, and HSV, with tobacco use identified as the main risk factor. Viruses were more often detected in malignant stages (OSCC) than in OPMDs, suggesting they may contribute to both disease onset and progression. However, further research is needed to confirm their direct role in malignant transformation.
