This review summarizes the safety profile of chitosan-based nanoparticles used in drug delivery. Toxicity studies from 2014–2024 show that these nanoparticles generally have low toxicity and are safer than free drugs. Acute toxicity tests reported high LD50 values (>5000 mg/kg), and subacute studies showed no significant adverse effects. Multiple administration routes (oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal, inhalation, topical) were evaluated, all demonstrating favorable safety. The review serves as a reference for future chitosan nanoparticle research and drug development.
